Haleen Lee works across painting, photography and publishing, taking architectural apertures as his subject.
Windows, corridors, stairwells. These are the parts of a building deliberately cut open — for the exchange of light, air and sound, or for passage into another space — and they are the only points where inside and outside actually meet. Lee paints them and removes everything else: the wall, the furniture, the view that should be visible through the opening. Stripped of context, the structure stops depicting a place elsewhere and enters the room the viewer is standing in. The painting is not a window onto something. It is a threshold, here.
Borderless carries out this method in paint. Symmetrical division lifted from architectural elevation orders the picture, and a carefully weighted void set inside it is where the tension collects — yeobaek, the active void; symmetry is the frame that lets it work. Frame and ground are tuned so they cannot be separated at a glance. Because it is unsettled where a form begins and ends, the viewer has to come closer and look for it. That delay is the pace the work is built for. The palette is held to a narrow, low-saturation band; the ground colour sets the hour and mood of each work, like light coming from behind the frame.
The Magazine extends the method into photography and publishing. Its structure is borrowed from the fitting shot — the photograph taken during a fitting to record how a garment sits on the body, in which the person stands as a support for the clothes. The Magazine keeps that frame and sets a painting beside the photograph. Participants are photographed full-length, with styling left entirely to them; the shapes and colours their clothing and bodies produce are extracted, rebuilt as painting and set beside the photographs. Laid out in sequence, the pairs cohere into a typological record, published as an art book of 100 participants. The project continues beyond that number.

The Magazine is a photo-painting series derived from Borderless. One hundred participants, each photographed full-length, are paired one-to-one with one hundred paintings extracted from those photographs and collected in a 208-page book.
The structure comes from the fitting shot: the photograph taken during a fitting to record how a garment sits on the body. Full-length, frontal, against a plain ground, repeated under the same conditions, it is made to be checked rather than published, and in it the person stands as a support for the clothes. It is the most functional image the industry produces. The first draft of this series was made in 2024 from the fitting shots of a fashion studio, while working there as a photographer and content designer. The Magazine keeps that structure and sets a painting beside the photograph: the colours and forms the clothing and the body produce are lifted out and given a plane of their own. Where the image existed to verify a garment, painting now stands.
That is also why the work is not an editorial shoot — not because it stands outside fashion, but because it begins with fashion's most practical record and empties out its content.
Participants are recruited through social media and selected on whether what they actually wear aligns with the direction of the work. Clothing, hair and make-up are decided entirely by the participant; moving the styling from photographer to subject is the decision that separates this from a commercial shoot. Each participant is recorded full-length in a chosen location, and the shapes and colours produced by the clothing and the body are then extracted and rebuilt as painting.
The final form is sequence. Photograph and derived painting are placed side by side, and images sharing formal resemblance accumulate into a typological record. The figure is not the subject of representation but a carrier for the colour of a place and a moment: the painting does not describe the person, it absorbs the state around them. Holding to continuity, frontality and objectivity, the structure can extend indefinitely as long as there is something to compare.
When we consider the surface of painting as architectural cladding, Lee's The Magazine (2025–2026) can also be understood in an interesting way. […] The figures' outfits are reproduced in the book as digital paintings, yet they are arranged at nearly the same size as the subjects of the photographs. […] Lee's approach from the outset emphasizes not decorative display but the very act of wrapping a surface. And when these images are reinterpreted as paintings, they leave the page and are transformed, within the physical space of the exhibition, into places where the viewer's gaze comes to stand—just like the models who once stood before the camera. (Yuki Konno, "Façade and Passage," text for Aperture, 2026)
The conditions of production are part of the work. The project was carried out during military service: the shoots, begun in February 2025, were split across the leave and furlough available, and the graphic work continued in whatever time remained. The first edition of 30 copies was printed in May 2026, after discharge, and a first revised edition of 60 copies followed in August.
A method that began in painting is tested by passing through photography and publishing — that is why The Magazine is an extension of Borderless rather than a departure from it. The test continues wherever the book is placed: in bookshops in Seoul, Paris, Glasgow, Tokyo and Taipei, and in the collections of the Kunstbibliothek, Staatliche Museen zu Berlin; Biblioteka at the Architectural Association, London; the library of Kunsthochschule Berlin Weißensee; and AABB OS Library, Seoul. The project does not stop at 100 participants. It is ongoing.

Borderless is an ongoing series of paintings on architectural apertures — windows, corridors, stairs.
An aperture is the part of a building opened on purpose: for the exchange of light, air and sound, or for movement into another space. It is the only place where inside and outside genuinely meet, and pictorially it is where plane meets plane and tension appears. Stairs add a vertical perspective: the repeated rhythm of the steps carries the eye up or down toward a point that cannot be seen, giving direction to a still picture.
The series keeps that place and discards the rest — no wall, no furniture, no landscape beyond the frame. Stripped of context, the structure stops representing a particular place and becomes an object in its own right, absorbed back into the space the viewer occupies. The painting does not show somewhere else. It is a threshold, here.
Composition begins in symmetry. The symmetrical division is taken from architectural elevation and it produces balance, but balance is not the point. Set a carefully weighted void inside an ordered structure and the tension collects in the empty part. Symmetry is the frame that lets the void work.
Monochrome plane and figure seep into each other within a single picture. The boundary between frame and ground is tuned so it cannot be read at a glance, and the viewer is given time to find where a form begins and ends. That delay is the pace the series is built for.
The architectural pass-through structures that Lee depicts gather the gaze into the painting while at the same time holding it fast there. When a horizontal line appears at the top, one can no longer look further upward; when an acute angle appears, one may feel the gaze becoming gradually obstructed. Yet this depiction captures the character of the pass-through structure well, and it intensifies the longing for the image one reaches at the end of that path. At the same time, the structure is not merely a route to pass along; it is laid out like a place of shelter within. […] When Lee's paintings are not merely cold, the reason lies not in the confinement of the passageways surrounding the gaze that enters the picture plane, but in a rendering that acts like a protective shield. (Yuki Konno, "Façade and Passage," text for Aperture, 2026)
The palette is deliberately narrow. The ground colour is not a backdrop: it sets the hour and mood of each work and acts as light coming from behind the frame. Rather than seizing attention with strong colour, the work uses colour that acts slowly, so the viewer searches the picture on their own terms.
The series has no closed narrative. The same motifs return with small shifts in form, proportion and colour; looking again and recombining are what drive it. Each work carries a code recording its year and dimensions, and because the format is written into the code, canvases of the same size can be set adjacent and joined into a single plane. The border this series deals with is the one inside the picture — where plane meets plane, where frame seeps into ground, where a figure begins and ends. That this border is never fixed is the condition of the work, so the series does not converge on a destination but keeps extending as an open structure.
The formal premise of Borderless was set in Jeju in 2023–24. The large figurative oil paintings made in Berlin from 2018 had already taken architecture and its surrounding nature as their subject, treating the window as an opening for light, air and sound. Working alone in Jeju after the Diplom, reading on East Asian architecture alongside Simon Morley's The Simple Truth: The Monochrome in Modern Art, the picture moved gradually away from representation. The motifs and the layered structure remained; the representational context — landscape, interior, perspective — was removed. Borderless begins there. The first works followed in Seoul in 2024; production slowed during military service (October 2024 – April 2026) and has resumed in full since.

Windows, passages, stairs — openings deliberately cut into architecture so that light, air and sound can pass through, and the only points where inside and outside actually meet. Haleen Lee keeps only these structures on the canvas and removes the walls, the furniture and the view beyond. Stripped of context, the structure no longer shows a place elsewhere; it becomes part of the room in which it hangs.
The exhibition brings together new works from Borderless, the painting series that fixes this method, and The Magazine, which carries the same method into photography and publishing. On the white cyclorama of a space that was once a photo studio, participants appear in clothing of their own choosing.
Supported by Arts Council Korea and the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture.
“In sum, Lee's paintings can be understood as appearing, from where we view the exhibition, not only as windows through which the gaze is directed beyond, but also as cladding in which the gaze can linger. When we come to wear the cladding that is painting—if only with our gaze—we can feel a sense of ascent toward what lies beyond, even if no landscape is represented. […] Walter Benjamin speaks of the distant view and the near view fused into one within an instant. Lee, rather, accepts this momentary overlap while seeking to stretch out the space between them and extend it into a passage. Like the shift in tone from façade to passage, Lee's Aperture goes in and out between painting and architecture, between surface and interior.”

pip : qiq
Group Exhibition
About Gallery, Daegu
2026.08.08 - 30
Poster by Shin Jihye
"Pip" is a word that means a fruit's seed, a radio signal's beep, and the call of a small bird or animal. Reflected in a mirror, it becomes "qiq" — a word with no dictionary meaning — a state in which meaning is generated rather than fixed to a single interpretation. The works in this exhibition begin from a scale small enough to fit in the hand, and within the blank space that this smallness creates, and the close viewing distance it invites, look closely at the subtle movements of material, body, and time.
Over the past several years, Korean contemporary painting has been marked by work that actively absorbed the sensibility of the digital environment. Smooth surfaces rendered with the airbrush, volumetric forms evoking 3D modelling, pixels and grids, the layering and division of images, compositions resembling video sequences — all of these showed how deeply the digital environment had permeated the formal language of painting. The static plane acquired a temporality, as though it were a moving screen, and painting came to disclose an increasingly light and fluid sensibility. Recently, however, another shift can be detected in the work of younger artists. They summon the trace of the hand, the texture of paint, chance and delay, and the temporality of the body into painting and ceramics. In place of the smooth surface they reveal roughness; in place of the immediate result, the process of emergence; in place of the completed image, a state of indeterminacy. This attitude — rethinking matter and body, time and sensation — poses the question of a post-digital sensibility anew. The digital is no longer an unfamiliar technology but an environment embodied within our senses. Rather than reproducing a digital aesthetic or rejecting its grammar outright, these artists pass fully through it while moving back and forth between matter and image, body and data, the real and the unreal, exploring new ways of relating across those distances.
The seven artists in this exhibition were all born between 1995 and 1999, a generation that experienced the analogue and the digital alongside one another. While sharing a common generational sensibility, each develops distinct work grounded in their own formal language and worldview.
